Palace Grassi (Palazzo Grassi)
Major sights in Venice
This museum is situated in an imposing palace designed by Massari on the Canal Grande, right opposite Ca Rezzonico.
Palazzo Grassi was built on the Grand Canal between 1748 and 1772 for the wealthy Bolognese Grassi family, right before the fall of the Republic in 1797. This was the last palace to be erected in Venice before the fall of the republic. The building has passed various owners, until, in 1983, it was purchased by Gianni Agnelli's FIAT, restored and modernized.
Palazzo Grassi has hosted some of the most important and prestigious artistic exhibitions in Venice.
The Grassi Palace was taken over by French luxury-goods magnate François Pinault in 2005 and refurbished by architect Tadao Ando to stage major shows of contemporary art. Events kicked off with a small selection from Pinault's own storerooms, which are believed to contain well over 2,000 works.
