Venice islands: Crevan
The island of Crevan is situated in the Burano Marshes, at the crossroads of
the Burano Canal and the Crevan Canal.
The island is often not shown in ancient maps of the Lagoon. Its history began at the time of Austrian domination, when it was the seat of a small military garrison. The island is now privately owned (for about thirty years it has belonged to the Verona family Polo).
Rich with gardens, it is a rare example of how an island, for decades left to the mercy of the weather, can be saved from certain death and transformed into an oasis of peace and beauty. On Crevan, the embankments and perimeter buttresses have been rebuilt, and the ground has been raised by landfill. An old fort - built in 1820, a military construction that is unique in its kind, and still conserved in the lagoon - has been renovated and transformed into a house.
The island also conserves a century old transport "small fishing boat", which can be seen by the two ship's yards that appear above the vegetation. It was launched in 1898, is over 20 meters long, in discreet conditions, and we could perhaps say that it is the most antique model in existence.
