Venice islands: Isola dei laghi
Dei laghi island is situated in front of Torcello on the Burano Canal.
Until the sixties, the Island of Lakes was part of the shelfing system of the "Lakes Marsh". When the area was partially covered by mud taken from dragging a number of canals, it was filled with earth, and the area was called "Island of the Lakes". In part "island" and in part "marsh", it has never been inhabited and therefore, apart from a few huts in the orchards, has no architectural structures.
Until a few years ago, the island was not included in the various maps of the lagoon, although it already existed several years before they were prepared. In 1990, the Venetian Cultural Association (AS.CU.VE) associated with the regional and national AUSER, began recovery work creating traditional orchards run by the elderly from Burano. Other botanical and naturalistic activities have been organised by the Venice Lagoon Forum and by the Burano group "Isola che c'è".
In the recent PALAV (Planning for the Lagoon and Venice Areas), the Island of Lakes has been included as an "island" and no longer a dumping area for mud. The island is now also included in the morphological recovery plan for the islands by the New Venice Consortium.
