Venice islands: Le Vignole
Situated on the east side of Venice (about one km), the island extends from the port of Sant'Erasmo to the port of Lido.
It is a long wedge-shaped sandy ridge, with a luxuriant vegetation.
Historic notes Known in ancient times as Biniola, or also the island “of the seven vines”, it was one of the favourite holiday places, of the inhabitants first of Altino, then of Venice. According to the poet Martial, the residences there were more magnificent than at Pozzuoli.
A small church was built there in the seventh century; all that remains of it today is a chapel dedicated to St. Erosia, flanked by a small bell tower. There are strong signs of military presence: as well as a long building, once used as a powder-magazine and situated opposite S.Erasmo, the island is connected by a bridge to the Fort of S.Andrea, built in the sixteenth century to defend the Lido lagoon inlet against the Turks.
Especially in the fine season, Le Vignole is an ideal place for a picnic or a lunch in one of the trattorie with pergola and garden, located near the landing stage.
