Until 1717, year in which the church and the monastery were completely destroyed by fire, the island enjoyed of importance and magnificence, thanks to the strategic position barycentre point between dry land and City, in order to give hospitality to famous personages.
After the fall of Serenissima, when the Carmelites, succeed to the Benedictines, moved to the present monastery in Venice, the building was converted in politic prison and in 1806 the church was destroyed and the prison converted in powder magazine. From that moment until the end of the Second World War the island was used for military aims.
